‘Too Late’: Islami Andolan on Jamaat Withdrawing Candidate for Faizul Karim
Jamaat-e-Islami has announced that it will not field a candidate in the constituency of Syed Muhammad Faizul Karim, the Senior Nayeb-e-Amir of Islami Andolan Bangladesh. This information was shared by the party's Nayeb-e-Amir, Syed Abdullah Md. Taher.
He spoke to reporters on Sunday night after a meeting with Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus at Jamuna. During the briefing, Taher highlighted Jamaat's position regarding the upcoming elections.
However, Islami Andolan is unwilling to take this decision into serious consideration. In an immediate reaction, the party’s Assistant Secretary General, Ahmad Abdul Kaiyum, said that there is nothing more to be done with such concessions now. He further commented that the situation has become like a decision taken far too late.
Previously, on Friday, Islami Andolan Bangladesh announced its departure from the 11-party alliance led by Jamaat-e-Islami after failing to reach a consensus on seat-sharing for the elections. The announcement from Jamaat not to field a candidate in Faizul Karim’s seat came three days after this split.
Notably, Syed Muhammad Faizul Karim, Senior Nayeb-e-Amir of Islami Andolan, has filed his candidacy for the Barishal-5 (Sadar-City) and Barishal-6 (Bakerganj) constituencies. Jamaat stated that they would withdraw their candidacy specifically from the Barishal-6 seat. Maulana Mahmudunnabi, the Secretary of Barishal District Jamaat, was the candidate for that constituency.
