Tarique Rahman Heads to Bogura After 19 Long Years

After an absence of nearly 19 years, BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman is set to travel to Bogura on 11 January — marking his first visit outside Dhaka in almost two decades.

Responsible leaders of Bogura district BNP confirmed the development late Sunday (4 January).

According to the schedule:

  • Tarique Rahman will arrive in Bogura on 11 January and spend the night there.
  • On Monday (12 January) at 10:00 am, he will participate in a mass prayer at Altafunnesa Playground, seeking forgiveness for the soul of his mother, Deshnetri Begum Khaleda Zia.
  • He is then expected to proceed to Rangpur. On the way, he will visit the shrine of Hazrat Shah Sultan Mahmud Balkhi (R.) in Mahasthangarh, Shibganj upazila.

Bogura district BNP Vice-President and Sadar Upazila BNP President Maftun Ahmed Khan Rubel said: “Inshallah, the long wait of Bogura residents is about to end. After 19 years and 18 days, on 11 January, BNP Acting Chairman and Bogura’s pride, Tarique Rahman, is coming to Bogura. The next day, Monday (12 January) at 10:00 am, he will join a mass prayer at Altafunnesa Playground for the forgiveness of Begum Khaleda Zia’s soul.”

Abdul Wahab, General Secretary of Shibganj Upazila BNP, added: “On 12 January, party chief Tarique Rahman will visit the shrine of Hazrat Shah Sultan Mahmud Balkhi (R.) in Mahasthangarh on his way to Rangpur. We will welcome him under the leadership of BNP nominated candidate for Bogura-2 (Shibganj) Mir Shah-e-Alam. Party leaders and activists will accompany him to the last boundary of Shibganj at Rahabal.”

Context

Tarique Rahman is contesting the 13th National Parliament Election from Bogura-6 (Sadar) constituency. His nomination papers have already been declared valid by District Commissioner and Returning Officer Toufiqur Rahman, who confirmed: “After scrutiny, no irregularities were found in Tarique Rahman’s nomination papers. Therefore, his candidature has been declared valid.”

This visit comes at a time of heightened political activity ahead of the national election and referendum scheduled for 12 February 2026.
