BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed has announced that Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman will be the sole speaker at the reception programme organised to mark his return to the country after 17 long years.

He made this statement at a press conference held at BNP Chairperson’s political office in Gulshan on Wednesday (24 December).

Salahuddin Ahmed said the gratitude programme has been arranged at the service lane of 300 Feet Road in one corner of the capital to minimise public inconvenience. No one other than Tarique Rahman will deliver a speech on the occasion. Leaders and activists have been instructed to use the Kanchan Bridge for commuting.

He said Tarique Rahman does not support any programme that causes public suffering. He has already prohibited leaders and activists from gathering at London’s Heathrow Airport. “In Bangladesh, we are making every effort to follow his directive, though perhaps not 100 per cent,” he added.

He further said Tarique Rahman wishes to go directly from the airport to the hospital to see his ailing mother, and to visit the graves of his father and brother. He has chosen a date for his return that falls within three consecutive public holidays in Bangladesh.

It was informed at the press conference that Tarique Rahman will arrive in the country on a regular Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight at 11:50 am on Thursday. Upon arrival, members of BNP’s Standing Committee will receive him.

A medical team along with a 6-bed field hospital will be in place for the reception programme. A help desk will be set up for passengers at the airport. Several parking areas and reception points have been designated in Dhaka North and South City Corporations.
