Md Rashed Khan, who resigned as general secretary of Gono Odhikar Parishad, has joined the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).

On Saturday (27 December), he formally joined BNP at the party’s central office, receiving a bouquet of flowers from BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir. BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed was also present on the occasion.

Gono Odhikar Parishad stated that Rashed resigned to contest the Jhenidah-4 constituency on the sheaf of paddy symbol. However, after the party promoted this as an election strategy, a faction of the party expelled him on charges of breaching discipline. A press release issued by the party’s office secretary on Friday announced his expulsion.

Earlier, Rashed had resigned from the post of general secretary. In his resignation letter, he wrote: “Please accept my salaam and best wishes. As a comrade on the path of struggle, I have engaged in movement, struggle and politics with you since the 2018 quota reform movement. If anyone, including you and your comrades, has been hurt by my conduct or statements, I seek forgiveness from all.

“I thank you for approving my resignation from the post of general secretary. Wherever I am, our relationship will remain sweet and bound by brotherhood. I seek your prayers and love. Due to personal reasons, I am resigning from the post of general secretary from today. I express best wishes for you and the party.”
