Iran’s Quds Force Commander Esmail Qaani Reportedly Executed on Suspicion of Treason

Unverified reports circulating in Arab media and regional outlets claim that Brigadier General Esmail Qaani, commander of Iran’s elite Quds Force, has been arrested and executed by the regime on suspicion of espionage following the joint US-Israeli airstrike that killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei last Saturday.

Qaani, 68, was the highest-ranking IRGC figure not present at the Tehran presidential palace when it was destroyed in a large-scale operation involving dozens of Israeli fighter jets. Iranian state media confirmed Khamenei’s death at age 86, but no official statement has been issued about Qaani’s status or whereabouts since the attack.

The claims emerged overnight, with some sources alleging Qaani was identified as the source who provided critical intelligence enabling the precise strike on Khamenei’s underground command bunker. Arab-language social media and regional commentators have described him as the “mole at the pinnacle of the crumbling regime,” noting his repeated survival of targeted attacks that killed other senior figures.

Qaani has long been nicknamed “The Man With Nine Lives” for narrowly escaping multiple Israeli operations. He was believed to have been killed alongside Hezbollah’s presumed heir apparent, Hashem Safieddine, in a recent bunker strike, but sources in Lebanon, Iraq, and Iran later confirmed he was not present. He similarly avoided an earlier attack that eliminated Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.

Qaani assumed command of the Quds Force—the IRGC’s external operations arm responsible for arming and coordinating the “Axis of Resistance” across the Middle East—in January 2020, following the US drone strike that killed his predecessor, Qassem Soleimani.

Since taking over, he has outlived scores of prominent allies and subordinates, including more than 40 senior figures killed in the opening phase of Israel’s recent “Operation Epic Fury.” The pattern has fueled long-standing suspicion within Tehran, and after Israel’s deep penetration of Hezbollah’s leadership, Iran reportedly launched an extensive internal mole hunt.

The alleged execution, if confirmed, would mark a dramatic purge at the highest level of the IRGC amid the regime’s most acute vulnerability. Tehran has not commented on the reports, and no independent verification of Qaani’s arrest or death has emerged.

The strike that killed Khamenei was captured in dramatic aerial footage released by the Israeli Defense Forces, showing a massive explosion and plume of smoke rising from the Tehran compound after a wave of strikes described as targeting a “secure emergency asset” intended for use during combat.

Iran has responded with a series of retaliatory actions, including the reported destruction of Bahrain’s largest oil refinery, cluster-missile strikes on Tel Aviv, and continued attacks on Israeli-linked targets in Lebanon. An evacuation warning issued by Israel for southern Beirut suburbs has caused widespread panic and gridlock as residents flee.

The United States, under President Donald Trump, has meanwhile begun what officials call a “mission” to neutralize Iran’s naval capabilities, with the IRGC’s Shahid Beheshti warship—commissioned only last year—among the first reported losses.

The silence from Tehran on Qaani’s fate has only intensified speculation about internal power struggles and the depth of foreign intelligence penetration at the highest levels of the Iranian state.
