Campus Political Unrest: How Students Can Stay Mentally Resilient

Political unrest in Bangladesh’s higher education institutions is not a new phenomenon. For years, student organizations’ dominance, shifts in the national political landscape, strikes, and clashes have disrupted the academic environment. These disturbances not only halt education but also take a significant toll on students’ mental health, particularly for those living in dormitories or away from family, creating intense stress and anxiety. As a psychologist, I will discuss how students can remain mentally resilient in such challenging circumstances and adopt strategies to maintain their studies, future goals, and inner peace.
- Acknowledging and Understanding Stress
The first step to mental well-being is recognizing one’s emotions. During political unrest, students often experience anxiety, fear, panic, confusion, or anger. Suppressing these feelings can lead to long-term issues like depression, anxiety disorders, or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It’s crucial to give yourself time to process emotions, reflect on them, and seek professional help from a counselor if needed.
- Maintaining a Routine and Staying Productively Engaged
Even when campus classes are disrupted, sticking to a stable routine fosters mental stability. Consider:
- Maintaining fixed sleep and meal schedules
- Reading books or enrolling in online courses
- Practicing free-hand exercises or yoga
- Learning a new hobby, such as writing, drawing, or music
Such productive activities boost the brain’s dopamine and serotonin levels, promoting mental well-being.
- Staying Informed, Not Overwhelmed
While staying aware of political developments is important, excessive exposure to news or negative social media posts can heighten anxiety. Limit news consumption to a specific time each day and dedicate the rest to personal growth and constructive tasks.
- Building a Support System
Maintaining connections with family, friends, or classmates can provide emotional stability during turbulent times. Listen to and share feelings with others. If needed, utilize university counseling services or mental health helplines for support.
- Focusing on Long-Term Goals
Political unrest is temporary, but your dreams and goals are long-term. Many students have overcome such challenges to achieve success. By staying mentally grounded, you can too.
- Self-Reflection and Personal Growth
Use this time to focus on self-assessment, career planning, or skill development. This can boost confidence and help counter the frustration caused by political unrest.
Ultimately, while political unrest may be beyond students’ control, mental resilience is a personal choice. With the right mindset, strategies, and support, students can navigate adverse environments and find their path. Psychology teaches us that a crisis is not an end but an opportunity for a new beginning.
