Decomposed Body Found Near Iran's World Cup Training Venue
A severely decomposed body has been discovered inside the trunk of an abandoned vehicle near the official training venue of the Iranian national football team in Mexico. Journalists at the scene confirmed the gruesome discovery on Friday (June 12) local time.
According to eyewitnesses, local police in Tijuana opened the trunk of a grey Toyota SUV to uncover the remains. The vehicle, bearing California license plates, was left parked in a supermarket parking lot directly opposite the Caliente Stadium. The Iranian national football team, popularly known as "Team Melli," is currently using the stadium as their primary training ground ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Forensic experts dressed in white protective suits cordoned off the perimeter to examine the vehicle and recover the body, which was later transported to the local morgue.
Body Shows Signs of Violence Amid Scorching Heat
The Tijuana Prosecutor's Office confirmed that a routine police patrol unit initially flagged the suspicious SUV. A spokesperson for the department detailed the initial findings:
"A search of the vehicle revealed the body of a male wrapped inside black bags in the trunk. The body exhibited clear signs of physical violence." — Spokesperson, Tijuana Prosecutor's Office
Authorities estimate that the vehicle had been sitting abandoned in the parking lot since Wednesday. Investigations are being complicated by extreme weather conditions, as temperatures in Tijuana have soared up to 28°C in recent days with prolonged exposure to intense sunlight, accelerating the decomposition process.
Geopolitical Tension and High-Security Protocols
Tijuana, a Mexican city bordering the United States, has long struggled with cartel-related violence and organized crime. According to official government statistics, the city recorded more than 1,200 homicides in 2025 alone.
The shocking discovery comes at a highly sensitive time for the Iranian delegation. Team Melli's participation in the 2026 World Cup had already faced immense uncertainty due to ongoing military tensions and a near-war situation between Iran and the United States. The team had originally planned to set up their training camp in Arizona, USA, but was forced to relocate to Mexico as geopolitical conflicts intensified.
Since arriving in Mexico, the Iranian squad has been placed under maximum-security protocols. Heavily armed military personnel and federal agents escort the team convoy during all transits between their hotel and the training ground. On Friday, the heavily guarded Iranian team convoy departed the Caliente Stadium premises just minutes after forensic teams removed the body from the scene.
