Brazil President Lula Speaks to Ancelotti on Neymar’s World Cup Inclusion
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has revealed that he discussed Neymar’s potential inclusion in the 2026 World Cup squad with national team coach Carlo Ancelotti.
In an interview with ‘Brazil 247’, Lula said the conversation took place during the Women’s World Cup hosting announcement event on 26 January 2027. Ancelotti reportedly asked for his opinion on calling up Neymar.
Lula replied: “Look, if he is physically fit and has the footballing ability, then why not?”
The President added that Neymar must show professionalism and prove his fitness, citing Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo as examples of players who returned strongly after setbacks.
Neymar, who has been out of the national team for over two years due to injuries, scored in the 4th minute for Santos in a 1-1 draw against Recoleta (Paraguay) in the Copa Sudamericana.
After the match, Neymar faced an awkward confrontation with fans in the VIP gallery at Vila Belmiro. He responded by pointing to the Santos logo on his jersey and saying he respects the club from his heart.
In the mixed zone, he expressed frustration, saying: “I understand fans criticising our performance, but when it becomes personal, it’s hard to accept. I give everything for this club. Sometimes fans cross the line and it hurts.”
Coach Ancelotti is expected to announce Brazil’s World Cup squad on 18 May.
