Five Madrasah Students Killed, At Least 20 Missing in Ukhiya Landslide
At least five madrasah students have been killed after a massive landslide triggered by relentless rainfall hit a Rohingya camp in Ukhiya upazila on Wednesday afternoon. Local authorities fear the casualties could rise significantly as at least 20 other children remain missing under the debris.
According to eyewitnesses, a massive chunk of a hill collapsed directly onto a makeshift Moktob (elementary religious school) following days of torrential downpours. More than 30 children were reportedly inside the structure attending their regular lessons when the mudslide buried the building.
Immediately following the disaster, local Rohingya volunteers, Armed Police Battalion (APBN) personnel, the Fire Service, and members of various international humanitarian agencies launched an emergency rescue operation. Rescue teams are continuously clearing the mud and debris to locate the trapped victims, and officials warn that the death toll is highly likely to climb as the operation progresses.
