A 4.0 magnitude earthquake struck the Bay of Bengal early Thursday (27 November) at 3:29am, with its epicentre located 118 km from Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar.

According to Volcano Discovery, the tremor was very light and most residents did not feel it. EMSC reported the quake occurred at a depth of 10 km.

This is the second tremor in less than a week. On Friday last, a powerful 5.7 magnitude earthquake originating in Narsingdi shook Dhaka and large parts of the country – one of the strongest felt in recent years.

The Friday quake triggered panic as people rushed out of high-rise buildings, homes, offices and shopping malls. At least 10 people died nationwide and several hundred were injured.

Authorities continue to assess structural damage from the earlier quake, particularly in the capital.
