Earthquake shakes Narsingdi again

A mild aftershock measuring 3.3 on the Richter scale struck the Baipail area of Gazipur district this morning, just over 24 hours after the devastating 5.7-magnitude earthquake that killed at least 10 people nationwide.

Dr. Md. Bazlur Rashid, a senior official at the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), confirmed the tremor hit at 10:36 am. He described it as a direct aftershock of Friday's main quake, which originated in Madhabdi upazila of Narsingdi district at 10:38 am.

The main event, centred at coordinates Lat. 23.77°N, Long. 90.51°E (about 13 km east of Dhaka's Agargaon seismic centre), caused widespread panic and structural damage. Tremors were felt as far as Kolkata and parts of eastern India.

Friday's toll rises amid aftershocks At least 10 people died, including a newborn and a medical student, with over 500 injured – many from panic-induced stampedes, building collapses, and heart attacks. Narsingdi reported five fatalities, Dhaka four, and Narayanganj one. In Gazipur alone, 252 were hospitalised, including over 300 garment workers trapped during evacuations due to locked factory gates.

Damage assessments continue, with reports of cracked buildings, tilted structures, and fires in Dhaka's old quarters. Power disruptions affected seven stations, leading to rolling blackouts.

 

NOTE: BMD in the afternoon clarified the epicenter was in Palash, Narsingdi and explained that their initial assessment report was faulty. TDC reported accordingly after the clarification.
