Following a five-hour blockade of Shahbag to demand justice for the death threat against Roknuzzaman and their three-point demands, students of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) have announced a new program. On Tuesday (26 August), they concluded the blockade with a “Long March to Dhaka” initiative, and vehicular movement in Shahbag returned to normal by around 8 PM.

Sakibul Haque Lipu, General Secretary of the Engineers’ Rights Movement, told the media that students will gather again at Shahbag starting at 10 AM on Wednesday. He called on students from all engineering and science and technology universities across the country to join the movement.

The demands of the students are as follows:

  • Recruitment for 9th-grade engineering positions (Assistant Engineer or equivalent) must require passing a competitive examination and a minimum BSc degree. Promotions through quotas or creation of equivalent posts under different names will not be permitted.
  • Recruitment examinations for 10th-grade technical positions (Sub-Assistant Engineer or equivalent) must be open to both diploma and BSc degree holders.
  • Appropriate legal action must be taken against individuals using the title of “Engineer” without a BSc degree in engineering. Non-accredited BSc engineering courses must be brought under IEB-BAETE accreditation through proper procedures.
