MPO Teachers’ House Rent and Medical Allowances to Double, Ultimatum Issued for Nationalization

House rent and medical allowances for teachers of MPO-registered educational institutions will be doubled, following a meeting with the Education Adviser on Wednesday, August 14, 2025. The protesting teachers, who have been demanding nationalization, also issued a one-month ultimatum, warning of a nationwide full-day strike across all educational institutions starting September 15 if their demands are not met by September 14.

Sources from the meeting revealed that a proposal to increase house rent allowance from Tk 1,000 to Tk 2,000 and medical allowance from Tk 500 to Tk 1,000 has been sent to the Finance Ministry for approval. The discussions, attended by the Education Adviser, Professor C.R. Abrar, and other stakeholders, covered the universal transfer policy and the issue of increasing house rent allowances. The Education Ministry requested proposals from the teachers on how to implement the house rent increase, which the teachers agreed to submit after further deliberation. The ministry assured that discussions on increasing house rent and addressing other demands would continue. A source indicated that preliminary approval for the teachers’ demands has been secured, with gradual implementation expected.

Delawar Hossain Azizi, Member Secretary of the Nationalization Aspirant Alliance, announced the ultimatum after the meeting, emphasizing that their demands are justified. “We have given the government 30 days until September 14 to meet our demands. If they fail, we will launch a comprehensive movement, including a full-day work stoppage at all MPO-registered institutions starting September 15,” Azizi stated. The teachers’ demands include not only increased allowances but also the nationalization of their jobs and the introduction of a universal transfer system.

The decision to double allowances comes amid ongoing protests by MPO teachers, who have highlighted disparities compared to government teachers. While government teachers receive house rent allowances at 45% of their salary and 100% festival allowances, MPO teachers currently receive only Tk 1,000 for house rent and 25% festival allowances, deemed insufficient given current market inflation.
