Secretary Committee Recommends Up to 100% Basic Salary Increase

The secretary committee has recommended raising government employees’ basic salaries by up to 100 percent under the proposed ninth national pay scale, with the highest increase proposed for lower-grade employees.

The committee held its final meeting on the ninth national pay scale on Wednesday at the Secretariat, chaired by Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Gani. Sources familiar with the meeting said the proposed salary increase would vary by grade. The committee has recommended up to a 100 percent increase in basic pay for lower-grade employees.

The committee also proposed implementing the ninth pay scale in two phases. The first phase would cover basic salaries, while the second would cover allowances and other benefits. A member of the committee, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the proposed pay structure would provide different increases based on grades.

“The recommendation is for salary increases of up to 100 percent. The cabinet-level committee will now take the final decision on the recommendation,” the official said. The secretary committee reviewed the reports of the National Pay Commission, Judicial Service Pay Commission and Armed Forces Pay Commission before making its recommendations, the official said.

“We have scrutinised the reports of the National Pay Commission, Judicial Service Pay Commission and Armed Forces Pay Commission and made recommendations on all three. Even after this, I do not understand why two new committees have been formed,” the official added. The recommendations will now go to the cabinet-level committee for a final decision on the proposed ninth national pay scale.
