AL leader arrested at Darshana immigration while heading to India
Meherpur district Awami League General Secretary and former upazila chairman M A Khalek was arrested at the Darshana International Immigration Checkpost in Chuadanga on Thursday while he was preparing to travel to India for medical treatment.
Immigration police became suspicious during the verification of his documents in the morning and sought information about him through intelligence agencies. Police later found that he had multiple cases against him and showed him arrested in a case filed under the Special Powers Act.
A team of Detective Branch (DB) police from Gangni subsequently took Khalek towards Gangni in Meherpur.
Khalek’s son Asif Reza said his father had been suffering from health problems for a long time and had a blockage in his heart. He said the family was taking him to India for bypass surgery.
“To my knowledge, there is no regular case against my father. He is on bail in the cases that have been filed against him.”
According to sources at the immigration checkpost, Khalek arrived at Darshana on a medical visa to travel to India. During the document verification process, immigration officials became suspicious and contacted intelligence agencies to verify information about him in Gangni.
The inquiry found information about several cases against him. Police subsequently confirmed that he would be shown arrested in a case filed with Gangni Police Station.
Mohammad Tariq, a sub-inspector at the Darshana International Immigration Checkpost, said Khalek came under suspicion because of a case filed against him under the Special Powers Act.
He said an inquiry through intelligence agencies confirmed that Khalek is the general secretary of the Meherpur district Awami League and that he has multiple cases against him.
According to police, a case was filed against Khalek at Gangni Police Station on April 13, 2025. He was shown arrested in Gangni Police Station Case No. 15 under Sections 15(3) and 25D of the Special Powers Act, 1974.
Khalek, son of Mojahar Ali Biswas, is from the Thana Road area of Gangni Bazar in Meherpur. He served as a former upazila chairman and is currently the general secretary of the Meherpur district Awami League.
