Two Students Die by Suicide After Failing SSC Exams

The emotional toll of the nationwide 2026 SSC examination outcomes manifested in devastating fashion on Monday, August 10, resulting in the deaths of two female examinees who succumbed to despair over academic setbacks.

In Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj, 16-year-old Halima Khatun Torika died by consuming poison after discovering she had failed her English examination. A student of Chakpara Adarsha School and daughter of Tarikul Islam from Puratan Unishbighi village in Shahbazpur union, Halima had passed her other subjects but was overwhelmed by the single failing grade when results were published at noon.

Family members rushed her in critical condition to the 250-bed Chapainawabganj District Hospital. Emergency medical officer Dr. Shahrina Islam reported that Halima was brought to the facility at approximately 2:40 p.m., where examinations confirmed she had already passed away before arrival. Shibganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Motiur Rahman confirmed the incident, stating that her body would be handed over to the family following necessary legal procedures.

In a parallel tragedy in Rajshahi's Bagmara upazila, another 16-year-old student, Karina Pal, died by suicide after obtaining disappointing marks in her science examinations. A science student at Chandenara High School and daughter of Kanchan Kumar Pal from Mohabbatpur village in Gonipur union, Karina suffered a severe mental breakdown upon learning she had performed poorly in Chemistry and Physics.

According to local and family accounts, after speaking briefly with her mother following the result publication, Karina entered her room and hanged herself from the ceiling fan using her mother's sari. She was rescued in an unconscious state, but succumbed to her injuries while being rushed to the Rajshahi Medical College Hospital. Bagmara Police Station OC Tauhidul Islam noted that law enforcement officers were immediately dispatched to the scene and an unnatural death case is being filed.
