Reports Claim Former IGP Benazir Ahmed Released on Bail in Dubai

Reports have surfaced in online media claiming that former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed has been released on bail from a Dubai prison, though the Bangladesh Police Headquarters states it has not yet received any official confirmation and is currently verifying the information.

According to a report by the online news portal Asia Post, a court in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) granted bail to Benazir Ahmed on Monday (July 27). Following the completion of required legal procedures, he was released from custody on Thursday (July 30). The report noted that while he is in good physical health, he declined to comment on ongoing legal matters. Under his bail conditions, his passport remains in court custody, and he is barred from leaving the UAE without judicial permission following hearings regarding extradition documents submitted by Bangladesh.

Speaking to The Daily Campus, Assistant Inspector General (Media & PR) of Police Headquarters A H M Shahadat Hossain stated that authorities have not received formal notification regarding the bail order. He added that the police administration is actively working to verify the claims.

Benazir Ahmed was previously detained by Dubai police on June 12 at a shopping mall following coordination with Interpol, acting on corruption charges filed by Bangladesh's Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). Dubai authorities formally notified Bangladeshi officials of his arrest shortly thereafter.

Benazir served as Director General of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) from January 2015 to April 2020 before serving as Inspector General of Police until September 2022. He left Bangladesh in 2024 amid corruption investigations into his assets. Following the political transition, courts ordered the confiscation of his properties—including the Savanna Eco Resort in Gopalganj—and an Interpol Red Notice was issued for his arrest in 2025.
