Abul Barkat Secures Bail in July Uprising Murder Case
A Dhaka court on Tuesday granted bail to prominent economist Professor Dr. Abul Barkat in a case filed over the murder of businessman Abdul Wadud in the capital's Nilkhet area during the July mass uprising.
Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Mostafizur Rahman passed the order on Tuesday afternoon following a comprehensive bail hearing. The legal development was formally confirmed to reporters by Public Prosecutor Shamsuddoha Suman immediately after the court adjourned.
Professor Abul Barkat, a well-known academic and former chairman of the Department of Economics at the University of Dhaka, had been implicated alongside several others in connection with the street violence and fatalities that occurred during the political upheaval in July.
The defense counsel argued for his bail citing his academic standing, age, and lack of direct involvement in the incident. Following the scrutiny of the case dockets and arguments from both sides, the magistrate approved the bail petition.
