Former Member of Parliament and celebrated folk singer Momtaz Begum has been granted bail by the High Court in connection with three separate criminal cases. A High Court division bench passed the order on Monday after hearing arguments from her defense counsel.

The legal breakthrough was formally confirmed to reporters by her panel of defense lawyers following the conclusion of the court session today.

Momtaz Begum had been in custody since May 12 last year, following her arrest by law enforcement at around 11:45 PM from a residential building located behind the Star Kabab restaurant in the capital's Dhanmondi area.

Prior to her arrest and ensuing legal complications, the prominent musician was a highly visible figure in national politics, serving as a lawmaker under the Awami League banner.

Momtaz Begum last contested the 12th National Parliamentary Election from the Manikগঞ্জ-2 constituency as the official nominee of the Awami League, running with the traditional "Boat" symbol. However, she failed to retain her parliamentary seat, losing the election to independent candidate Dewan Zahid Ahmed Tulu.
