Maksudul Haque Chowdhury Masud, the Senior Joint Convenor of the Raozan Upazila Jubodal, was shot dead in broad daylight by unidentified miscreants at a local market in Raozan Upazila of Chattogram today, Saturday.

The incident took place around 1:30 PM at the Pahartali Bazar area under Raozan Upazila. The targeted killing has triggered severe political tensions across the region, prompting mass protest rallies by local BNP and Jubodal activists.

According to local residents and law enforcement officials, Masud Chowdhury went to a local pharmacy at Pahartali Bazar to purchase medicines. While he was inside the shop, a group of armed assailants riding motorcycles arrived at the scene. The miscreants opened fire on him at point-blank range, discharging several rounds of bullets before swiftly fleeing the area.

Masud sustained multiple critical gunshot wounds and collapsed on the floor. On-site witnesses and locals immediately rescued him and rushed him to the Raozan Upazila Health Complex, where the attending doctors declared him dead upon arrival.

The deceased leader, Masud Chowdhury, resided in the Betagi Union under the neighboring Rangunia Upazila. Within local political circles, he was widely known as a highly influential youth organizer and a close, loyal follower of BNP Member of Parliament Humam Quader Chowdhury.

Following the news of the assassination, hundreds of leaders, activists, and supporters of the BNP, Jubodal, and Chhatradal brought out impromptu protest processions in both Raozan and Rangunia upazilas. The demonstrators blocked local roads, chanted slogans demanding the immediate arrest of the killers, and sought justice for the slain leader. Extra police contingents have been deployed to key intersections to maintain law and order, and a police drive is currently underway to identify and apprehend the gunmen.
