A police team came under attack by a gang of muggers during an early morning raid in the capital's Mohammadpur area today, Monday (May 11). In the ensuing confrontation, a top-listed mugger identified as Palash was shot and injured, while three others were apprehended.

The details of the operation were shared by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) ADC (Administration), Mir Asaduzzaman, during a press briefing held on Monday afternoon.

According to ADC Mir Asaduzzaman, the police received a tip-off that Palash and his associates had gathered in the Town Hall area of Mohammadpur at dawn to prepare for a series of muggings. When the police team reached the spot, the criminals sensed their presence and launched a sudden attack.

  • Casualties: One police officer was injured during the struggle. In self-defense, the police opened fire, resulting in a gunshot wound to the gang leader, Palash.

  • Arrests: Three individuals were arrested from the scene. Two of them, including the injured Palash, are currently receiving treatment under police custody at a local hospital.

During the raid, the police recovered a significant cache of weapons and stolen goods used by the gang, including:

  • Chinese axes

  • Cleavers (chapatis) and knives

  • A toy revolver (used for intimidation)

  • Stolen mobile phones

Police officials noted that Palash is a notorious criminal in the Mohammadpur area. He is a primary suspect in several ongoing cases, including a murder case and multiple robbery charges filed across different police stations in the city.

The Mohammadpur area has recently seen an increase in targeted police operations following public concern over rising street crimes. Law enforcement authorities reiterated their "zero-tolerance" policy against organized mugging syndicates and stated that security patrols in the Town Hall and surrounding areas would be further intensified.
