A shadow of profound grief has fallen over the family of Bullet Bairagi (35) as his body was recovered 12 hours after he went missing on his way back from Chittagong. His wife, Urmi Hira, confirmed the tragic news in a brief, heart-wrenching social media post: “My Bullet is dead.”

The recovery occurred on Saturday (April 25) morning near the Irish Hotel on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway in Cumilla. Bullet Bairagi, a former student of the 5th batch of the Finance Department at Jagannath University, was serving as an Assistant Revenue Officer at the Dhaka Customs, Excise, and VAT office.

The tragedy is sharpened by its timing; only three days prior, on April 22, Urmi Hira had shared their wedding photos on Facebook to celebrate their marriage anniversary. By Saturday morning, her posts shifted from celebration to a desperate plea for help.

At 11:00 AM on Saturday, while her husband was still missing, she posted his details and contact information, explaining that he had departed Chittagong after completing his 44th Foundation Training. She noted that they had last spoken at 1:25 AM when he mentioned he was on his way, but he never arrived.

According to police and family sources, Bullet Bairagi boarded a bus from Chittagong’s Alankar Mor at 11:00 PM on Friday (April 24). During his final phone call at 2:25 AM, he informed his family that he had reached the Tomsom bridge intersection in Cumilla city. When his phone went dead and he failed to appear, his father, Sushil Bairagi, filed a General Diary (GD) with the Cumilla Kotwali Model Thana.

The Maynamati Highway Police recovered an unidentified body from a sidewalk near the Irish Hotel and Restaurant following a 999 emergency call. By 1:00 PM, family members identified the body at the station.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Abdul Momin of the Maynamati Highway Police noted that while there were no major visible injuries on the body, his face was found bloodied. OC Touhidul Anwar of the Cumilla Kotwali Model Thana stated that the body has been sent to Cumilla Medical College Hospital for an autopsy.

Authorities have confirmed that a thorough investigation is being conducted to determine the exact cause of death and whether any foul play was involved in the sudden demise of the young official.
