Police detained 11 individuals in Jamalpur Sadar Upazila during the early hours of Wednesday, March 25, after locals intercepted a large shipment of petrol allegedly intended for the black market. Approximately 3,000 liters of fuel, stored in 15 large drums, were recovered during the operation in the Kalibari Bazar area.

The primary suspects identified include Hakim Mia, 40, from Melandaha Upazila, and Phul Mia, 38, from Sariakandi in Bogra. Other detainees include Hafizur Rahman, 40, Md. Shah Jamal, 50, Md. Maruf Hossain, 24, Md. Juglu Mia, 44, and Md. Johurul Islam, 45.

According to local residents, several vehicles carrying the fuel drums were spotted moving through the area around midnight. Suspicious of the late-night activity, villagers blocked the convoy and conducted a search, uncovering the massive quantity of petrol. The locals then held the suspects and alerted the authorities.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Jamalpur Sadar Police Station, Mizanur Rahman, confirmed the incident and stated that police personnel were immediately dispatched to the scene to take custody of the individuals and the seized fuel.

Jamalpur Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Nazneen Akhter addressed the situation, stating that a regular case will be filed against the detainees under the relevant laws. She further clarified that the seized petrol would be processed for public auction in accordance with government regulations.

Authorities are currently investigating the source of the fuel and whether a larger organized syndicate is involved in the illegal trade of petroleum products in the region.
