Student Arrested for Assaulting Invigilator After Cheating in NU LLB Exam
Police have arrested Md. Rasel Mia, a student accused of assaulting a teacher who caught him cheating during the National University (NU) LLB final examination at Tejgaon College centre in Dhaka.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Jewel Rana of DMP’s Tejgaon Division confirmed the arrest following a raid on Wednesday (11 March).
The incident occurred last Friday when invigilator Sohel Rana caught Rasel Mia and another examinee, Sharif Islam, using unfair means during the exam. When the teacher attempted to take action, the accused reportedly obstructed him and assaulted him with fists and kicks.
Sohel Rana lodged a case at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station on 9 March, naming Sharif Islam, Rasel Mia, and six to seven unidentified individuals as accused.
The attack drew immediate attention from Education Minister Dr. A.N.M. Ehsan-ul-Haque Milan, who is personally monitoring the investigation.
In the FIR, Sohel Rana stated that while on duty in Room No. 608, he observed Rasel and Sharif using unfair means. He recommended their expulsion to higher authorities. In response, the accused and others blocked his path and beat him indiscriminately.
Tejgaon College Acting Principal and Centre Secretary Professor Shamima Yasmin confirmed the two accused examinees have already been expelled. She said the college administration, under strict supervision from NU and the college, is committed to ensuring a cheat-free environment. Legal action is underway against those involved in the disorder and assault on the teacher.
National University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. A.S.M. Amanullah told The Daily Campus: “We are investigating the incident. If the allegations are proven, the accused students will face lifetime expulsion.”
He added: “Assault on a teacher will not be tolerated under any circumstances. We have adopted a zero-tolerance policy to ensure a smooth academic environment and the safety of teachers in the university.”
