Domestic Worker Dies After Fall from Banani Building; House Owner in Custody
A 16-year-old domestic worker named Pinky died after falling from the roof of a residential building in Banani, Dhaka, on Sunday (8 March) afternoon. The incident sparked immediate outrage among local residents, who stormed the building, vandalized parts of it, and accused the household of murder.
According to police and eyewitness accounts, Pinky worked as a domestic helper in a flat on the third floor of the building. Witnesses reported seeing her body fall from above around 2:00 p.m. She was rushed to hospital in critical condition but was declared dead by on-duty doctors.
News of her death quickly spread, leading to an agitated crowd gathering at the scene. Protesters alleged it was a case of murder and forced their way into the building, breaking the entrance gate and causing damage. They staged a prolonged demonstration demanding a thorough investigation and justice.
Banani Police Station OC Md. Moinuddin said officers reached the site around 3:15 p.m. after receiving information. Preliminary investigation suggests the girl jumped from the seventh floor. However, police are probing whether there is any other reason or hidden circumstances behind the fall.
“We are analyzing the building’s CCTV footage,” he added. “The footage shows Pinky going to the roof in the afternoon, but the full picture is still unclear.”
No formal case has been filed yet in connection with the death. However, the house owner has been taken into police custody for questioning to uncover the real circumstances. The exact cause of death will be confirmed after the post-mortem examination, police said.
