The government has decided to change the name of the Rapid Action Battalion, the police’s special force, instead of dissolving it as long demanded by the United Nations and other human rights organizations. Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said the new name will be Special Intervention Force, or SIF.

He said the Chief Adviser has already approved the decision and a government order will be issued soon. The announcement came after the law and order core committee meeting of the Home Ministry on Tuesday, 3 February.

He also said the force’s uniform will be changed and SIF members will be seen in new attire shortly.

RAB was formed on 26 March 2004 during the BNP‑led four‑party alliance government, in response to the rise of militancy and a worsening law and order situation. The force was created with personnel drawn from police, the army, navy, air force, Ansar and VDP, BGB, and the Coast Guard.
