Earlier, on Friday afternoon (2 January), the resort owner Shri Pati Bachar along with three tourists (two men and one woman) were taken hostage by armed forest dacoits while traveling in a boat in a small canal near the Dhangmari area of Chandpai Range in the Sundarbans. The group had come from Dhaka for a trip and had booked accommodation at the “Gol Kanon” resort in Dhangmari with the plan to spend the night there.

During the boat ride in the canal adjacent to the resort in the afternoon, the armed dacoits abducted five people, including a woman. Later that night, the two female tourists were released, but the resort owner Shri Pati Bachar and the two male tourists remained in captivity. The dacoits contacted the families of the hostages and demanded a large ransom.
