Nishi Rahman (38), accused of drowning eight puppies in a sack in a pond in Ishwardi of Pabna, has been sent to jail after arrest.

She was produced before Pabna’s Amli Court-2 from Ishwardi Police Station around 4:30 pm on Wednesday (3 December). After hearing, Judge Tariqul Islam ordered her imprisonment.

Earlier, Ishwardi Upazila livestock officer Aklima Khatun filed a case against Nishi Rahman at the police station around 11:30 pm on Tuesday (2 December).

Police arrested her from a rented house in Ishwardi municipal area around 1:30 am. Nishi Rahman is the wife of Hasanur Rahman Nayan, officer of the Small Farmer Development Foundation under Ishwardi Upazila rural development and cooperatives department.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Ishwardi Circle) Pranab Kumar told The Daily Campus, “The incident went viral on social media, following which the upazila livestock officer filed the case as plaintiff. The sole accused Nishi Rahman was arrested that night. After legal procedures, she was produced in court in the afternoon.”

He further said, “From preliminary investigation and interrogation of the arrestee, we learned that annoyed by the puppies’ barking and yelping, Nishi Rahman put the pups in a sack and left it by the pond. She says she does not know who threw it into the water. We are investigating the incident further.”

A dog named Tom had been living in a corner of the Ishwardi upazila nirbahi officer’s residence for long. It gave birth to eight puppies a week ago. From Monday morning, the mother dog was seen in a frenzied state, crying and running around after failing to find her pups.

Later, upazila parishad employees learned that the wife of Small Farmer Development Foundation officer Hasanur Rahman Noyan had tied the eight live puppies in a sack and thrown them into the upazila parishad pond at some point on Sunday night. The bodies were recovered from the pond on Monday morning.

Ishwardi Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Moniruzzaman said, “Over the puppy killing incident, Small Farmer Foundation officer Hasanur Rahman Noyan was given written orders on Monday (1 December) to vacate the gazetted quarter. They vacated the house on Tuesday (2 December) afternoon and moved elsewhere.”
