The interim government has officially classified all 708 government colleges in Bangladesh into four categories (A, B, C, D) through a gazette notification issued today, Monday (24 November), by the Secondary and Higher Education Division (Government College-5 Branch) of the Ministry of Education.

Categorisation criteria and numbers

  • ‘A’ Category – 81 colleges → Student strength: more than 8,000 → Honours subjects: more than 10
  • ‘B’ Category – 74 colleges → Student strength: 4,501–8,000 → Honours subjects: more than 5
