Mamata Banerjee and five others were detained by Delhi Police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) ahead of a protest by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) against India's Election Commission in the capital on Saturday (October 10), according to a statement issued by the party.

The statement said Banerjee and the five others were detained outside her residence. They were later being taken to an undisclosed location in a prisoner van, the party said.

Police also detained Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Neha Bora, Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation general secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya, lawyer Prashant Bhushan and rights activist Yogendra Yadav.

The detentions took place as security was tightened across Delhi ahead of the CJP's protest against the Election Commission.
