'Victory of Democracy': Sonam Wangchuk and CJP Celebrate Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s Resignation

Social activist Sonam Wangchuk and Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke have hailed Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan's resignation as a "victory of democracy" and a powerful testament to the impact of peaceful public mobilization.

Pradhan submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday following weeks of intense demonstrations led by student organizations and civic groups at Delhi's Jantar Mantar. The protests stemmed from examination irregularities and paper leak allegations surrounding the NEET-UG 2026 exams.

Direct Democracy from the Streets

Reacting to the news after concluding a 26-day hunger strike, Sonam Wangchuk commended the resilience of the nation's youth:

"It's a victory of democracy—direct democracy... straight from the streets. It's a victory of peace, patience, and perseverance," Wangchuk posted on X. "Congratulations CJP, Gen Z of the nation, and thank you all citizens for shedding fear and the fear of fear and rising up from every corner of the nation. From accountability, now to reforms."

Celebrations at Jantar Mantar

The news triggered widespread celebrations at Jantar Mantar, where CJP supporters had been camping for weeks. CJP President Abhijeet Dipke addressed the gathered crowd shortly after receiving confirmation of the resignation.

"We have done it. Dharmendra Pradhan has resigned," Dipke announced. "This is proof that if you are not afraid and do not bow down before the government, you can achieve anything in a democracy."

Dipke also addressed Chief Justice of India Surya Kant from the stage, referencing the remark that originally sparked the movement's name: "I would like to thank CJI Surya Kant. If he hadn't called us cockroaches, I wouldn't have come to India, and this movement would not have started."

Pradhan's Resignation and Future Agitation

In his resignation letter, Dharmendra Pradhan stated that he chose to step down to protect the interests of students and prevent political friction.

While welcoming the resignation, CJP leaders confirmed that their protest at Jantar Mantar will continue until their remaining demands are addressed, including 1 crore INR in compensation for families of students affected by exam-related suicides and accountability for police actions during recent demonstrations.
