Devastating Hotel Fire in Delhi Kills at Least 21

A massive fire tore through a five-story hotel in India's capital city early Wednesday morning, leaving at least 21 people dead and multiple others injured. According to local authorities, the deadly blaze erupted from a basement restaurant inside the building and rapidly engulfed the upper floors. Emergency responders managed to pull numerous residents to safety during a frantic rescue operation.

At the time of the incident, approximately 40 people, including foreign nationals, were staying at the establishment. Reports indicate that several of these foreign guests had traveled to India specifically to seek medical treatment.

Panic and Chaos as Fire Erupts During Sleep

The incident unfolded at around 8:50 AM on Wednesday at the Mikasa Inn hotel, located in a five-story building in the Malviya Nagar area of Delhi. Upon receiving the emergency call, authorities dispatched two water engines, two water bowsers, a quick response vehicle, and multiple other firefighting units to the scene.

The hotel, which features around 25 rooms, is situated in a narrow alley in the Hauz Rani area. Because the fire broke out in the early morning, the majority of the 40 guests inside were still asleep in their rooms. The situation quickly escalated into chaos, and dramatic footage circulating on social media showed terrified occupants jumping from the upper floors of the building in a desperate bid to escape the advancing flames and suffocating smoke.

Keshar Singh, a chef working at the hotel's restaurant, provided a harrowing first-hand account of how the disaster started.

"Around 8:00 AM, I was attempting to turn on an electric stove when a sudden burst of flames erupted," Singh recalled. "Within moments, I realized the fire was spreading across the entire hotel. I immediately alerted my assistant. When I looked outside, the whole building was ablaze. I somehow managed to scramble out safely."

While the chef's account points to an electrical source in the kitchen, authorities noted that the definitive cause of the fire is still under official investigation.

State and National Leaders Express Condolences

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep grief over the incident, describing the loss of lives as "tragic." Taking to the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) issued a statement of solidarity.

"My deepest condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. I pray for the swift recovery of the injured. Authorities are taking all possible measures to assist those affected," the PMO stated.

The Prime Minister also announced an ex-gratia financial assistance package, granting 200,000 INR to the families of each deceased victim and 50,000 INR to each of the injured.

In tandem, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta expressed her profound shock and sorrow over the disaster. On X, she wrote, "I am deeply saddened by this loss of life. My heartfelt condolences go out to the bereaved families. I wish the injured a speedy recovery and wish strength and courage to everyone affected."

Chief Minister Gupta confirmed that emergency response teams—including the Delhi Fire Service, Delhi Police, Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), and CATS Ambulance Service—initiated rescue protocols immediately upon receiving the alarm. She credited their swift coordination with saving numerous lives and moving guests to secure locations. Gupta added that the Delhi government is closely monitoring the situation to ensure that comprehensive medical treatment and essential support are provided to the victims and their families.
