In a display of Japan’s strong cultural emphasis on punctuality, State Minister for Economic Security Kimo Onoda publicly apologized to the nation after arriving just five minutes late for a meeting with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.

A viral video circulating on social media shows Onoda rushing out of her car and jogging toward the Prime Minister’s office while repeatedly checking her watch. She entered the room after the meeting had already begun.

Speaking to journalists afterward, Onoda formally apologized, explaining that an unexpected road accident had caused the brief delay. She pledged to take extra precautions in the future to avoid any recurrence.

In Japan, punctuality in official duties is regarded as a fundamental professional and cultural value. Even minor delays by public officials often prompt formal public apologies, regardless of the reason.

The incident was widely reported by international outlets including Gazette Express, India Herald, and Latestly.
