US President Donald Trump announced on Monday (September 15) via a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, that he would file a lawsuit against The New York Times for $15 billion. In the post, Trump stated, "The New York Times has been lying about me, defaming me, and insulting me with impunity for many years. But no more, it must stop now."

He referenced the Times' support for Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election, claiming that it has become the "mouthpiece of the radical left Democrat Party."

Trump further stated that the lawsuit would begin in Florida, a stronghold of Republicans.

The BBC reports that Trump has long expressed dissatisfaction with left-leaning media outlets, viewing them as hostile to his presidency.

This is not the first time a US president has attempted to sue The New York Times. In 2023, a judge dismissed a lawsuit filed by Trump against the newspaper, ruling that the claims failed as a matter of constitutional law.

Trump also lost another defamation lawsuit in 2023, when he unsuccessfully tried to sue CNN over allegations of comparing him to Adolf Hitler. Later, a federal judge dismissed the $475 million lawsuit.
