Dismissing accusations that the National Citizen Party (NCP) "sold out" the July Uprising, its Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary on Monday said the party is committed to preserving the movement's spirit.
"For a long time, there's been an accusation against NCP. Did NCP sell out the July movement? We did not come for that. We are making every effort to preserve the spirit of July," he said at a roundtable titled "Implementation Roadmap of the July Charter" at the Jatiya Press Club in Dhaka.
"Among political parties, we've been working like an oil tanker. Jamaat, or BNP—for the last 15 to 20 years, they've built massive ships. But those ships have no oil. Then came NCP—with young people and students—bringing the fuel needed to move Bangladesh forward," said the NCP leader.
Patwary warned that if authorities make a U-turn on implementing the July Charter, the public will respond in the next election.
"If they [the government] reverse their stance, then in the upcoming election, having endured a 'bullet revolution,' people will now lead a 'ballot revolution'," he said.
On the nature of the upcoming polls, Patwary said, "BNP is 'lau', and Jamaat is 'kodu'. They have long been allies but are now pretending to be separate for the sake of election drama."
