Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami, extended heartfelt greetings to the Hindu community ahead of Sharadiya Durga Puja, the largest festival for Bengali Hindus, set to begin on September 28. In a statement issued by the party’s central publicity division today, Dr. Rahman, speaking on behalf of himself and Jamaat-e-Islami, emphasized Bangladesh’s global reputation as a beacon of communal harmony.
Dr. Rahman urged the administration and law enforcement to ensure robust security for a peaceful and unhindered celebration. He also called on Jamaat workers and peace-loving citizens to cooperate fully to facilitate the festival. Highlighting Bangladesh’s tradition of interfaith coexistence, he noted that Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, and Christians have long observed their religious ceremonies in a festive and harmonious environment, a rarity in global history.
Citing international praise, Dr. Rahman referenced former Australian High Commissioner Greg Wilcock’s admiration for interfaith cooperation during a year when Puja and Eid coincided, and EU delegation head William Hanna’s description of Bangladesh as an “advanced model of communal harmony” where diverse faiths coexist with mutual respect and freedom. He added that international organizations and major nations consistently laud Bangladesh as a “moderate Muslim country” and a role model for communal unity.
Dr. Rahman emphasized that Bangladesh’s religious festivals serve as a unifying platform, elevating the nation’s global standing. He expressed hope that Sharadiya Durga Puja would further strengthen tolerance and harmony, wishing happiness, peace, and prosperity for the Hindu community and all ethnic groups. He underscored the importance of preserving mutual love, tolerance, and respect as core elements of Bangladesh’s cultural fabric.
This message comes amid heightened communal sensitivities in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, where protests over a recent assault case have raised concerns about safety for minority communities. Dr. Rahman’s call for harmony aligns with efforts to ensure peaceful celebrations during the festival season.
