After a seven-year hiatus, voting for the Gono Bishwabidyalay Central Students' Union (GBCSU) elections began today at Gono Bishwabidyalay (GB) in Savar. While students inside the campus are casting votes in a festive atmosphere at the polling centers, tension is palpable outside the premises.

Reports indicate gatherings of outsiders and instances of disorder near the university's main gate and surrounding areas. Per regulations, only teachers, staff, voters, candidates, and authorized journalists are permitted entry. Despite this, some former students and unidentified individuals have entered the campus. Although the issue was brought to the attention of discipline committee member teacher Rajib Roman, no visible action has been taken yet.

According to the Election Commission, 350 security personnel are deployed on campus. Eyewitnesses report that around noon, a group of outsiders suddenly gathered inside the campus, creating chaos with shouting and commotion. This has raised safety concerns among voters. Additionally, allegations have surfaced that outsiders are being used for campaign propaganda on behalf of candidates.

Md. Jahid Hasan, candidate for Joint General Secretary (GS), said, “Law and order is a major concern for us. Even with police presence, various unfamiliar and outsider faces are visible on campus. The administration should take swift measures.”

Election Commission member Ali Azam Khan stated, “Voting inside the campus is proceeding peacefully. We haven’t noticed the situation outside. If such incidents have indeed occurred, we will take legal action.”

For context, GBCSU elections are underway at 19 polling centers from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

This marks the first central students' union election at the university since 2018, amid broader national trends of renewed student politics following the 2024 uprising. Similar tensions have been reported in other university elections, such as DUCSU, where external influences disrupted proceedings. Authorities have urged calm to ensure a fair process.
