Women Claim Victory in CUCSU Hall Elections Before Polls

The Chittagong University Central Students' Union (CUCSU) election commission has released the preliminary list for the CUCSU and hall parliament elections. In the hall parliament elections, 24 candidates are set to win uncontested due to the absence of rivals in various halls, with 21 of them being women. Additionally, in the preliminary screening for central union candidates, 19 aspirants—including two vice presidents (VPs) and one general secretary (GS)—have been disqualified.

The matter was confirmed on Monday (September 22) by Professor Dr A.K.M. Ariful Haq Siddiqui, member secretary of the CUCSU election commission. The published list shows that Mohammad Tanvir Hasan is being elected uncontested as the reading room, dining and hall library secretary for Shahjalal Hall, with no opposing candidate.

Among the women's halls, one candidate from Bijoy 24 Hall, 11 from Nawab Faizunnesa Hall, two from Pritilata Hall, and seven from Shamsunnahar Hall are being elected uncontested. In Bijoy 24 Hall, Antara Saha is being elected without contest for the sports and games secretary position.

In Nawab Faizunnesa Hall, for the VP position, Permita Chakma; for sports and games secretary, Iti Chakma; for literature, culture and publication secretary, Protyasha Chakma; for office secretary, Aparajita Barua Tinni; for reading room, dining and hall library secretary, Khin Khin Shen; for social service, research and information technology secretary, Monalisa Chakma; for science, research and information technology secretary, Suranjana Tripura; for communication and accommodation secretary, Shreya Talukder; and for three executive member positions, Ananya Chakma, Promita Chakma and Shipra Tanchangya are being elected uncontested.

In Pritilata Hall, Antara Chakma for sports and games secretary and Sirajum Munira for science, research and information technology secretary are being elected without opposition. In Shamsunnahar Hall, seven candidates are securing uncontested victories: Saimun Sadia for office secretary; Mocha Nishad Jannat for reading room, dining and hall library secretary; Iffat Ara Jui for social service, environment and human rights secretary; Kaniz Fatema Sifat for communication and accommodation secretary; and for three executive member positions, Naima Tasfia, Miftahul Jannat and Afia Zahin.

Two more candidates from Shilpi Rashid Chowdhury Hostel are also being elected uncontested for executive member positions.

Regarding the 19 disqualified candidates in the preliminary screening, Ariful Haq Siddiqui said, "Initially, 19 candidacies have been cancelled for various reasons. However, this is not final. Disqualified candidates can reapply, and their applications will be reviewed and accepted."

The disqualified candidates include one for sports and games secretary, two for assistant sports and games secretary, two for literature, culture and publication secretary, one for office secretary, one for assistant office secretary, one for assistant student welfare secretary, one for communication and accommodation secretary, one for law and human rights secretary, two for reading room and cafeteria secretary, and four for executive member positions.

Notably, nomination withdrawals can be made tomorrow, September 23. The deadline for receiving and disposing of objections regarding candidates is September 24, and the final candidate list will be published on September 25. Voting will be held on October 12 from 9:00am to 4:00pm.
