Earthquake Felt Across Bangladesh, Epicenter in India's Assam

An earthquake was felt in the capital and various parts of the country today, Sunday, around 5:30 pm local time. According to the Meteorological Department, the epicenter was located in India's Assam state, approximately 380 kilometers from Dhaka.
Seismologist Professor Humayun Akter told Prothom Alo that the quake measured 5.9 on the Richter scale at the epicenter, situated between Assam Valley and the Himalayas, midway from Assam's capital Guwahati. He described it as a moderate to strong earthquake.
Meanwhile, Md. Rubaiyat Kabir, an officer-in-charge at the Bangladesh Meteorological Department's Earthquake Observation and Research Center, stated to Prothom Alo that preliminary records indicate a magnitude of 5.6. No immediate reports of damage or casualties have been received, but the tremors caused brief panic in affected areas.
