Forty-seven hours after the conclusion of voting in the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JUCSU) election, the Election Commission has yet to announce the final results. This delay has sparked anxiety and frustration among students. Amid this situation, another member of the Election Commission, Dr. Rezowana Karim Snigdha, announced her resignation on Saturday (13 September) afternoon, formally confirming her decision to step down.
On Friday night, in a press conference, another Election Commission member, Professor Mafruhi Sattar, announced her resignation, citing the commission’s failure to address allegations raised during the JUCSU election before proceeding with vote counting.
She stated, “Yesterday, numerous questions were raised regarding the election. We had previously received various information through different channels. As a teacher and election commissioner, I always believed it was my duty to present my opinions to the Election Commission to ensure appropriate steps are taken.”
“I am compelled to say today that, despite receiving praise from many, whenever I offered opinions or raised concerns to make the right decisions, they were often altered in various ways. As a responsible person, I will not elaborate further,” she added.
Professor Sattar continued, “This afternoon, the Chief Election Commissioner called a meeting. We discussed at length. At one point, when I stepped out to offer prayers, I returned to find that vote counting had already begun. I repeatedly urged the Election Commission to suspend counting temporarily and address the allegations and issues to move toward a fair and transparent JUCSU election. But I have failed in this regard.”
“I have witnessed numerous irregularities and serious flaws that have called the entire election process into question. However, the Election Commission has shown an inability to accept my opinions. When I saw that vote counting had started without addressing my concerns, I formally informed the Chief Election Commissioner in writing,” she said.
Professor Mafruhi Sattar further clarified, “I did not resign under pressure; rather, I was pressured not to resign. I was even pressured in various ways to comply. I have never feared anyone, nor will I now. I have made the decision that I believe is right… I will not take any responsibility.”
