Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) election candidate Joyen Uddin Sarkar Tonmoy has been removed from the Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir’s panel for the executive member position. The decision follows widespread criticism on social media over a controversial Facebook status posted by Tonmoy, which sparked serious backlash. The move was confirmed by a candidate from Shibir’s panel and its central committee.
Amirul Islam, Student Rights Secretary of Islami Chhatra Shibir, told The Daily Campus, “Tanmoy was not dropped solely due to the Facebook status. Keeping the students’ mandate in mind, we decided to remove him from the panel.”
Miftahul Hosain Al Maruf, Sports Secretary of Shibir’s Dhaka University unit and a candidate for an executive member position, stated, “Tonmoy stepped down from the panel for personal reasons.” He added that a decision regarding the vacant position will be made by August 25, 2025.
The controversy stems from a Facebook status where Tanmoy reportedly wrote about Bir Sreshtho Matiur Rahman, stating, “A flight lieutenant was attempting to hijack a plane from Pakistan to India.” Following the criticism, Shibir decided to remove him from the panel. Additionally, Tanmoy’s image has been removed from the campaign banners of Shibir’s “United Students’ Alliance,” sources confirmed.
However, Tanmoy has dismissed the allegations surrounding his status as baseless, unfounded, and politically motivated in statements to the media.
