JU Faces Resistance in Evicting Expired Students from Halls

Jahangirnagar University (JU) administration launched a late-night operation on Saturday, August 16, 2025, to evict non-students from residential halls and seal vacant rooms, aiming to clear expired-term students ahead of the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JUCSU) elections. The effort faced resistance from former students, who demanded phased evictions and more time, challenging the administration’s capacity to enforce the directive across all halls.
The operation, conducted from 9:00 PM to midnight, involved Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Professor Mahfuzur Rahman, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Professor Sohel Ahmed, Proctor Professor Dr. AKM Rashidul Alam, and other hall provosts. Following a prior notice on August 10, 2025, coinciding with the JUCSU election schedule announcement (polling set for September 11), the administration had ordered non-students to vacate by August 16, threatening disciplinary action under university rules for non-compliance.
The team began at Kamal Uddin Hall, breaking locks on rooms occupied by expired-term students and sealing them. Some former students present requested an extension and were given until 10:00 AM Sunday to leave. Eyewitnesses reported that non-students resisted, demanding batch-wise phased evictions and questioning the administration’s ability, citing past failed attempts to clear halls. They also called for simultaneous operations across all halls.
Proctor Dr. AKM Rashidul Alam, also Kamal Uddin Hall’s provost, said, “Per our prior notice, we asked students to vacate. We sealed empty rooms after breaking locks. Those still here promised to leave by 10:00 AM tomorrow.” He added, “With JUCSU elections and the 54th batch arriving soon, we’re conducting this operation for overall campus stability. It will continue, and we expect student cooperation.”
