Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman was the only player from the country to be picked in last month's IPL auction. Kolkata Knight Riders, owned by Shah Rukh Khan, bought him for Rs 9.20 crore. However, in the context of recent political and social developments between the two countries, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has instructed the KKR management to release Mustafizur from their squad before the start of the IPL 2026 season.
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed the decision to ANI on Saturday (3 January).
The board secretary said the decision was taken in view of the current political and social situation. Particularly, in the wake of recent attacks on the Hindu community in Bangladesh and the resulting public outrage and heated atmosphere in India, the instruction has been given to release Mustafizur.
He stated: "Considering the prevailing circumstances, the BCCI has directed the KKR franchise to release Mustafizur Rahman. However, if KKR wishes, they can sign another overseas player in his place, and the board will grant permission for that replacement player."
It is worth mentioning that during the IPL mini-auction held in Abu Dhabi in December, there was intense bidding between KKR and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for Mustafizur Rahman. In the end, Shah Rukh Khan's franchise secured him for Rs 9.20 crore. However, since his acquisition, KKR management and owner Shah Rukh Khan have faced widespread criticism on social media. Several political leaders from BJP and Shiv Sena have also strongly criticised the inclusion of a Bangladeshi player.
