BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman on Saturday (29 November) revealed the real barrier preventing him from rushing to his ailing mother Begum Khaleda Zia's bedside: political realities beyond his individual control.

In an emotional social media post, he wrote:

"In this moment of crisis, like any son I have an intense longing to feel my mother's loving touch. Yet unlike others, I do not have the unrestricted freedom or sole authority to make that decision alone. The sensitive nature of this issue leaves little room for detailed explanation.

The moment the current political situation reaches the desired stage, our family's long and anxious wait for my return home will come to an end. We remain hopeful."

Tarique has lived in self-exile in London since 2008, facing dozens of cases filed during the Awami League government, including several life sentences and death penalties handed down in absentia. BNP insists these are politically motivated.

His statement makes it clear that his return depends not just on personal will, but on formal political assurances, legal safeguards, and an acceptable environment — conditions the party is negotiating with the interim government ahead of the upcoming national election.

Meanwhile, Khaleda Zia (79) remains in the CCU at Evercare Hospital with severe chest infection and heart-lung complications. Tarique thanked the nation for their prayers and urged them to continue.
