BNP Acting Chairperson Tarique Rahman has expressed deep gratitude to the nation for their prayers during his mother Begum Khaleda Zia's critical health battle, while hinting at an end to his prolonged exile once political realities stabilise.
In a Facebook status posted on Saturday, Tarique described the 79-year-old BNP chairperson's condition as "grave and precarious" as she receives intensive care at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka.
"The nation, transcending party lines, has steadfastly prayed for her recovery. The honourable Chief Adviser has personally assured full medical support alongside prayers," he wrote, thanking domestic and international medical teams for their "utmost sincerity and professionalism".
Tribute also poured in from friendly nations offering advanced treatment and cooperation.
On behalf of the Zia family, Tarique conveyed "heartfelt thanks" and urged continued prayers for Khaleda Zia's swift recovery.
He shared his personal anguish: "Like any son, I yearn for my mother's tender touch in these trying times. However, unlike others, my decision is not entirely autonomous or solely in my control. This sensitive matter has limited scope for elaboration."
Tarique, in self-imposed exile in London since 2008 facing multiple graft cases, added a hopeful note: "Our family remains optimistic that my long wait to return home will end the moment the political situation reaches the expected stage."
Khaleda Zia, jailed since 2018 on corruption charges but granted conditional release in 2020 due to health issues, was admitted to hospital on 23 November with chest infection and heart-lung complications. She was shifted to CCU on 27 November.
The statement comes amid BNP's preparations for the 13th parliamentary polls, with Tarique's potential return seen as a major boost. Party insiders say his voter registration will follow immediately upon arrival.
